DIATOMACEOUS EARTH - WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a non-toxic, safe substance made up from crushed fossils of freshwater organisms and marine life. The fossils are ground to a fine powder, the consistency of talcum powder, and has no smell or taste.  DE is extremely rich in silica - a mineral whose list of beneficial health effects continues to grow as more research is carried out.

DE is very inexpensive and readily available.  Just search eBay and you'll find many sources of food grade DE available.  I buy in bulk because it's more cost-effective, and I never want to risk running out of this stuff.

It is important to buy food grade DE for consumption - non-food grade DE can have various metals in it which are not good for health and should not be ingested by animals or humans.

The list of benefits is extremely long, so I'll only list a few.  These are benefits for animals and/or humans (yes - I take it regularly too!):

  • Removes all internal parasites, including intestinal worms and heartworms - no need to use chemical wormers if you give your animals DE;
  • Promotes hair/fur growth/prevents hair/fur loss; promotes hair and fur health;
  • Some people have testified their grey hair has lessened or disappeared completely;
  • Relief of arthritic and joint pain in some animals/people;
  • Promotes healthy nail growth;
  • Prevents symptoms of colitis and irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's Disease;
  • Promotes digestion and stomach health;
  • Promotes full absorption of dietary nutrients;
  • Relieves constipation and diarrhoea;
  • Remarkable increase in energy;
  • Relieves insomnia;
  • Weight loss (or weight normalisation);
  • Reversal of G.O.L.P.P. symptoms (Geriatric Onset Laryngeal Paralysis Polyneuropathy) **More about this in another post on this blog;
  • Promotes bone and tooth/gum health;
  • Greatly enhances the immune system;
  • Reduces the absorption of, and helps with elimination of aluminium and other heavy metals - promotes neurological health;
  • Promotes heart health;
  • Promotes wound and burn healing;
  • Eliminates flatulence;
  • Detoxifies;
  • Promotes health of all internal organs, including the pancreas - can greatly reduce symptoms of pancreatitis and diabetes type 2;
  • Doggie skin problems and bad smell;
  • Relieves symptoms of Lupus
And the list could go on.

Some of the beneficial effects of DE are evident immediately, while other effects take a little longer to manifest - but manifest they do.  As time goes on, you'll notice more and more health benefits - big and little health issues that disappear, sometimes without your noticing.

But the best thing is, your animals will FEEL better - no more tummy upsets, no more constipation or diarrhoea, no more itching, no more smelling or farting, no more patchy or course fur, no more lethargy, no more immobility, no more gagging or long breathing recovery after exercise... Even if you do nothing else for your animals, do one GREAT thing and buy some DE and give it to them and you'll be amazed at their increase in general health and the decrease in vet bills.  Give it to your dog, your cat, your horse, your guinea pig, your rabbit, your ferret - any animal at all.  And don't forget to give it to yourself!

Best to build up the amount you give your animals over a week or two.  We give our dogs (German Shepherd and Golden Retriever) two tablespoons per day.  I myself take two tablespoons per day.  Cats are a lot fussier about their food, so just introduce about a third of a teaspoonful in their food at first until they are no longer suspicious.  Increase it as you wish, but cats shouldn't need more than a heaped teaspoonful per day.  For humans - I take two heaped tablespoons full per day.

Note:  Since taking DE, I've had additional hair growth at the nape of my neck - possibly hair that stopped growing some time ago due to the aging process.  And although I wasn't bothered by the increase in hair loss before, I definitely have thick hair again now, and it's very shiny too.

I don't really have experience with dosages for other animals - but you can safely estimate the amounts based on those given for dogs and cats.  Horses can be given a lot more.  Try Googling for information.

I did find some testimonials on a website belonging to a seller of DE - http://www.earthworkshealth.com/pets-animals-testimonials.php .  There are testimonials for humans on this site too.  All of these testimonials (and there are many) make a very interesting read. I buy my DE from sellers on eBay.

And if you do go ahead and give DE to your animals, please do send me a brief testimonial and I'll publish it here.  We need to share what we learn so that animals everywhere can benefit.  Thanks and all the best!

PERMANENTLY ALLEVIATING COLITIS/IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

ATHOS

Athos, our German Shepherd, came to us as a "medical placement" from Battersea because he is elderly (12+ years old), and he has colitis.  The colitis caused him great discomfort and, as is typical of colitis sufferers, he alternated between constipation and diarrhoea, often resulting in spontaneous bowel evacuation.  He was on a very specific diet when he came to us which seemed to keep the condition under control - trouble was, the diet wasn't doing anything at all in sustaining general good health and we weren't happy with the idea of feeding him the two brands of tinned food for the rest of his life.  Also, I always prefer to get to the root of the problem and fix it, rather than just control the symptoms.

We have been feeding our dogs unprocessed food (mostly raw, with cooked vegetables, etc) and various supplements since 2007, and we have found that this diet performs miracles regarding the reversal of many canine health issues, including mobility problems.  So we wanted to feed Athos on this healthier diet as well (Athos also suffers from hip dysplasia).  The change-over allowed us to experience (oh what joy! - not) exactly what happens when a dog with colitis is fully symptomatic and we had to come up with a solution to his problem very quickly!

Turns out, yet again, that the "old ways" are the best.  We gave him food grade diatomaceous earth (sometimes called "Fuller's Earth") in his food and the constipation and diarrhoea stopped immediately.  Athos also seemed to be a lot more comfortable, which was made evident by his increased energy and playfulness.  He just looked happier.  His fur is now softer, and he's managed to put on a little weight so he now looks very healthy and strong.

Another great thing about giving diatomaceous earth to dogs is that their stools become very easy to clean up - neat packages with less smell.  (Hope you're not eating your breakfast while reading this).

We gave Athos and Bryn a tablespoon of D.E. twice a day for a couple of months, then changed the regime to two tablespoons in their evening meal only.

Athos was fully symptomatic in October and was given his first doses of D.E. then.  Since October, he hasn't had a single "accident" and his bowel movements are regular and normal in texture.  We can now feed him absolutely anything without any ill effects.

And...both Bryn and Athos used to suffer from severe, room-clearing, noxious and nauseating flatulence.  I am very happy indeed to report that this problem has disappeared also, although it took a while longer to go than their other symptoms of digestion problems.  But it was well worth the wait!

Happy Birthday Bryn!

Happy Birthday to Bryn

who is 15 years old (105 human years)

Let Me Introduce You To...ATHOS

When our Timba became suddenly absent from our family, he left a huge hole - one we knew could never be filled by another dog or dogs.  But we missed having a German Shepherd so much, we decided it was time we considered sharing our home with a dog who could be a companion to Bryn; an older dog who needed a good home where he/she would be loved and cuddled and exercised and fed all the right food and adored.

We found Athos on the Battersea website and we couldn't stand the idea of him spending his last months or years in a dog rescue home no matter how well he's treated there.  Athos is 11 1/2 years old, and he grew up with a Romanian family.  Unfortunately their two year old son developed an allergy to dogs, so poor Athos was relegated to the back yard for an entire year before Battersea brought him to England.  He joined our family on the 29th of September, 2014.

Athos who often crosses his front legs, as if posing.  Very elegant.
Athos is the most affectionate, cuddly dog we've ever met.  He loves to lay his head in our laps, and if he isn't stroked immediately, he nudges - hard.  He can take any amount of hugs at any time, and he loves his food.  For the first few days after his arrival, he was asking for affection pretty constantly, which is understandable.  But within a week he began to feel a lot more secure in his new home, and he was demanding affection less often, although he still loves a cuddle whenever they're on offer.

Athos is a perfect companion for Bryn - two old boys enjoying their retirement in style. They get on extremely well - as if they've known each other all their lives. Our cats, however, are not so enamoured of Athos because he's very curious about them, and very playful and affectionate.  The cats misinterpret Athos' exuberance and tend to stay away.  Cricket did find out what Athos would do if she hung around - she got a thorough licking all over her face and head until Athos backed off a little, enough for Cricket to make a dignified escape.

Athos chewing on a raw bone - num num num.

Athos came to us with health issues, one of which we've since found a solution for (colitis) and the other is currently being controlled with medication (mild hip dysplasia symptoms).  But we we were told in detail about these issues before we got him, thanks to one of Battersea's vets, so we knew what to expect.

We don't know from where in Romania Athos came, but it's possible he'd never seen the sea, so we took him to the beach here on the East Coast of England, where he had a wonderful time chasing and biting at the waves, ducking his head under water for a tennis ball, and playing with every dog he encountered along the way.  We'll be taking him there often, when we're not taking he and Bryn to the woods, or open fields, or country lanes for walks.

We are very grateful to Battersea for allowing us to adopt Athos - we couldn't have asked for a better dog to help us recover somewhat from Timba's death, and to be a brother to our Bryn.  And we're hoping that with all the love and affection and attention he gets with us, his life will be extended and it will be a longer before he leaves to join Timba.

Thank you so much Battersea.

In Loving Memory of Timba - April 2001 - July 2013

It is only now that I am able to post this without getting too sad...

On the 12th of July 2013, after a very short period of illness, our beloved Timba was put to sleep due to a very rare and aggressive form of cancer.  He was 12 years old.  For over a year we have been recovering from the shock, as it was only one month between diagnosis and euthanasia.  Until he developed a deep hole in his paw, we thought he was fit and healthy and likely to live for at least another one or two years if we continued to love and care for him as we were doing.  We miss Timba terribly, and always will.  He was a loving, clever and loyal friend, and of course irreplaceable.

Timba started his life with us as a puppy, and grew up alongside Bryn, our Golden Retriever.

 (Apologies for this grainy photo - taken with an old digital camera within days of his arrival in our home.)

His tail eventually grew, but with a hook to the left rather than straight.  He loved any food beginning with the letter "C" - cake, cheese, chips (or "crisps" as they're called in the UK), chicken...while he was young and had not learned his manners we had to watch him around food.  My daughter had a birthday party, and for reasons I can't remember, she had two cakes.  One we put on the table outside on the deck, but it only stayed there briefly as Timba thought it had been put there especially for him and ate the entire thing.  None of the kids standing around stopped him - they thought it was hilarious.  We referred to Timba as "The Cake-Eater" for the rest of his life.

In 2004, we moved to the UK, and rather than put Bryn and Timba into quarantine (Doggie Jail) for six months in the UK, we left them in New Zealand with a friend of ours, who cared for them for the quarantine period (7 months all up) and we arranged for them to be shipped over as soon as they got clearance.  So for a total of 7 months we were dog-less, which was awful.  The day we picked our two boys up from Heathrow was one of the happiest days of my life.  Both were extremely excited to see us, but after about five minutes of leaping about and licking (the dogs, I mean - not us), they settled down and seemed to be saying, "Okay, now that that's over, what shall we do now?"  It never ceases to amaze me how dogs (and other animals) live in the moment - it was as if we'd just been out for a couple of hours and they were pleased to see us home again.

Moving our Dogs to the UK (2005)

Because I'm wary of vaccinating humans or animals, Bryn had been vaccinated only once as a puppy by his breeder but never again since, and Timba had never been vaccinated before at any time.  Of course, to meet the animal export requirements, both Bryn and Timba had to be vaccinated with all of the standard vaccinations, and all at once.

And then the health problems started...

While the boys were still in New Zealand during the quarantine period, their caretaker told me that Timba wasn't keen on the dog food she was feeding them (and her own dog) and was finding it hard to get him to eat any kind of dog food.  She eventually found a food he would eat, although he remained unenthusiastic.  It was also about this time that the caretaker noticed Timba had developed an eye problem.  This turned out to be Pannus:

"Pannus, or a chronic superficial keratitis is a slowly progressive non-painful inflammatory disease of the dog's cornea (front of the eye). This is a bilateral disease (affects both eyes) seen most often in German Shepherds, Greyhounds, and Siberian Huskies but which can occur in other breeds as well."

Timba before the Pannus
Timba in 2012 when the Pannus was at its worst.

Timba had Pannus in both eyes.  In the UK, we took him to a canine eye specialist who said we had to apply some very expensive ointment to both eyes twice daily for the rest of his life, or he would lose his sight over time.  Timba was amazingly tolerant regarding the ointment - we'd call him over, tell him "eyes", and he'd immediately sit perfectly still, head up, so we could apply the ointment in each eye without any struggle whatsoever.  It was as if he knew we were trying to help him, and he gave us full cooperation.  Pannus is supposed to be "hereditary" according to some experts, and incurable.

Pannus Reversed

We kept up the ointment regime for a year or so, but due to the hassle to very patient Timba (who never objected but we knew the ointment stung) and the high cost, we decided we needed to find other ways to preserve Timba's eyesight. Over time we treated him with various electro-magnetic or scalar field devices (I'll explain another time), and Timba never lost his eyesight.  Not only that, the opaque orange-peel look to his eyes eventually disappeared, and his eyes looked close to normal within a year of starting the EM treatments.  Towards the end of his life, we think his eyesight had actually improved as he could once again locate tennis balls without relying on his nose.

 Immobility Reversed

Timba and Bryn both showed signs of immobility around 2007 - Bryn had quite suddenly shown symptoms of advanced arthritis and Timba had hip dysplasia.  It was evident that pretty soon, neither dog would be able to get into the car, or even move around easily.  Bryn had to "rock" from a sitting position in order to stand.

They also smelled like "old" dogs, yet Bryn was only eight years old, and Timba a year and a half younger.  Timba was still very unenthusiastic about his food, even when given the "best quality" commercial food and we were still finding it difficult to coax him to eat - adding tuna to his dog food seemed to be the only way to persuade him.

In November 2007, we changed their diet from commercially-made dog food to a more natural diet of raw meat and slightly cooked vegetables, grains (small amounts) with their usual additional mineral and vitamin supplements (which they'd been having all along.)  Within six months, both dogs became completely mobile again, showing no sign of pain or discomfort at all.  Both could once again leap into the back of our station wagon (estate) car, run and walk for miles without any ill effects.  And Timba became the "greedy" one out of the two - he suddenly developed much enthusiasm for his food, eating it all up and looking around for more.  It had been a long time since we'd seen him enjoy his dinner so much, and it was a delight to witness.

A couple of years later, Timba began to show discomfort from his hip dysplasia, so we took him to a vet for acupuncture treatments, which he loved.  He'd fall asleep during treatments - they seemed to relax him so much, and the treatments definitely stopped the pain, or at least most of it.  Acupuncture doesn't work quickly for every dog.  We later tried it on Bryn for his arthritis but it didn't seem to have any effect whatsoever.  (Now it's 2014, and he's just finished a course of laser treatment on his arthritic joints which were very successful.  He currently appears pain-free.)

Cancer

In June of 2013 I noticed blood on the floor after Timba had walked across it, and traced it to one of his feet, which had a very deep hole in one of the pads.  Thinking he'd injured it somehow, I cleaned it and covered it with a bandage.  A day or so later he developed a second hole, then a third hole on the top of his foot.  We took him to a vet who really had no idea what was causing the problem, and gave us antibiotics, manuka honey, etc. to give to him.  No healing occurred whatsoever.  In fact, it seemed to be getting worse.  Timba was also very breathless, panting a lot more than usual not just after exercise but at rest as well.  He was uncomfortable lying on his side, and tried to sleep lying with his head on or between his paws.  After a couple more visits to the vet, we decided we needed another opinion and took him to another branch of our veterinary centre and asked the vet who had given Timba the acupuncture years before.  After examination, she told us that Timba had a very rare form of cancer which begins in the foot, but effects the lungs, stomach, etc.  His stomach was full of blood (which was why he didn't want to lie on his side; if he did the weight moved and made him feel sick and put pressure on his lungs and other organs).  Timba was dying.  We released Timba from his misery on Friday, the 12th of July, and our misery began.  But we're coming to terms with his loss over time, and we are very thankful to have had so many wonderful years with our boy, and we have so many happy memories of Timba both in the UK and in New Zealand.  We miss you, Timbs - hope you're getting cake and chicken wherever you are.

(Fast) Wound Healing in Cat with Colloidal Silver

 10th April 2012

On the evening of the 10th of April 2012, Cricket limped into the house with a very deep wound. It appeared to be an animal bite - she probably put her front leg down a fox or badger hole and got warned off by the animal inside with a single bite.  When she first arrived home, the wound was bleeding but the bleeding stopped after an hour or so.  However, her entire leg was swollen and all she wanted to do was sleep.  She found it very painful to move and I had to reposition her often so she wasn't lying on the wounded leg.  For the first few hours, she wouldn't lie down at all, but slept standing up.

She didn't want to eat, but she was enthusiastic about drinking semi-skimmed milk. She wouldn't drink plain water. To prevent dehydration, I gave her the milk with colloidal silver mixed into it and left her to sleep without disturbance.

26 April 2012

This is a photo of Cricket's leg 16 days later. The skin had grown back over 70% of the wound, and the fur had also regrown along with it.  Cricket, by this time, had long regained her appetite and had resumed normal cat duties, including hunting.

11 May 2012

This photo was taken 15 days later. Cricket's bite wound had closed and the fur was rapidly growing over as well.

So in just over a month, Cricket had completely recovered from a deep raw wound, probably from a wild animal bite - a bite which may have carried some very nasty bacteria. To take her to a vet would have been, in my opinion, pointless - possibly even detrimental.  The wound was too wide to be stitched. The trip to and from a vet would have been very stressful and painful for her, and I was not prepared to post large antibiotic tablets down her throat two or three times a day as may have been prescribed by a vet.  Antibiotics have side-effects, and I believe that colloidal silver is unbeaten for its ability to prevent and eliminate infection and promote healing. To avoid distressing Cricket and also risk contamination from cotton wool, etc, the colloidal silver was never applied topically.  I did try (once) to drop the silver onto the wound, but Cricket made it very obvious that she didn't want that. So I relied on the silver doing its work internally and systemically.

I am hoping that Cricket will now be more selective regarding where and what she explores.

Cat's Urinary Infection - Gone in a Day

One of our two cats (Cricket) developed a urinary infection. She was peeing in inappropriate places (which she had never done before), including the dogs' beds.  Apart from the fact that Cricket would've been very uncomfortable, the first thing that needed to be stopped was the peeing in wrong places.  When a cat has a urinary or bladder infection, the pee is even more odourous than usual.

Cricket was subdued and straining to pee, and there was a small amount of blood in the urine. When I phoned the vet, they told me it would take about a week for antibiotics to kick in properly, and I couldn't wait that long for a) the peeing to stop and b) Cricket to feel better.  Plus, antibiotics can have side-effects in cats just as they do for humans.

I have a colloidal silver generator and I gave Cricket a 2ml oral dose via a plastic syringe straight into the mouth in the morning, early evening and again around midnight. By the next day, the blood had disappeared from her urine, and she'd stopped peeing in inappropriate places. Still a little subdued, so I continued dosing her for about a week, decreasing the dosage to two times a day, same amount.

Why did she get the infection in the first place? Both cats get the 'best' cat food money can buy. They are strong and glossy-coated, and ready to play, eat and sleep as healthy cats should. Their environment is clean and they get plenty of exercise.  Turns out that bladder or urinary infections are more often caused by dehydration than anything else.  And dehydration can be caused by feeding cats/dogs dry food. Our cats were getting a mixture of both wet and dry, and sometimes just dry food.  Cats get most of their water requirement from their food, NOT from drinking water from a bowl.

I stopped giving our cats any type of dry (kibble) food.  A few months later, however, I gave both cats a little dry food just for a change, and immediately Cricket started peeing in the wrong places again. No blood this time, as I think I gave her the silver again before it developed too far.  Lesson learned - wet food only, at all times.  Cricket hasn't had a problem since.

So what is Colloidal Silver (or Silver Colloid)?

Colloids are the smallest biological form of any matter.  They are small enough to pass through membranes and therefore they skip past the digestive process and are easily absorbed by the body.
There are many benefits of colloidal silver.  Colloidal silver supports the natural defence system of the body and is powerfully alkaline.  It is created when an electromagnetic process pulls tiny particles of silver from a larger samole of pure silver into (usually distilled) water.   The minute electric charge on each atom holds these silver particles in suspension.  This is essential to the effectiveness of the silver as it allows the particles to move more easily throughout the body.
Another benefit is that colloidal silver has been recognised as a powerful, natural antibiotic.  Research has shown that it works by acting as a catalyst, disabling the enzyme that single-celled bacteria, fungi and viruses require for the metabolism of oxygen.  This then suffocates the invading cell whilst doing no harm to any human enzymes, resulting in the removal of disease-causing organisms from the body.
It also works through the negative charge on the silver clusters binding up with the positive charge on the germ/bacteria.  This causes an interruption of the germs biological function which means that it is then unable to reproduce.
Colloidal silver has long been the subject of hot debate in medical circles.  In the 19th Century, colloidal silver was used prominently to treat all manner of illness and disease ranging from skin infections to common colds.  In the United States, this common use continued until 1983, when the FDA started its long and heavy oppression against the use of medicinal silver.  Arguably its disdain for silver's use in medicine came from the threat that it poses to the highly lucrative antibiotics industry.  Up until recently, any silver-based products had to be classified as a pre-1938 drug.  However, now that the FDA has begun to approve of medicinal silver, more and more products are emerging.
Colloidal silver has been reputed by various studies to be able to kill over 650 micro-organisms. It has been reported to be effective in fighting against: acne, AIDS, allergies, arthritis, athletes foot, boils, burns, candida, cystitis, diabetes, eczema, hay fever, indigestion, parasitic infections, psoriasis, ringworm, warts and yeast infections.
It can be used either orally or topically. When taken orally you can either place droplets directly under the tongue or it can be put into water and drunk. Silver is often used topically by spraying onto cuts, burns, skin infections or acne.

***Note:  In the case of the cat mentioned in my previous blog, she was given a larger dose orally using a plastic syringe. The exact dose is unknown, but using a syringe to administer orally indicates the dose was given by the millilitre, rather than 'drops'.

Curing Pyometra - without a vet

From a friend in New Zealand....

My friend (let's call him 'John'), heard about a female cat who was suffering Pyometra. Very nasty condition which requires immediate evacuation of pus inside the womb and spaying. If the condition isn't treated in time, the cat will die.  If the cat has surgery, this can cost a fortune and the cat can never breed again.

John (a natural therapist) recommended a large dose of colloidal silver 2-3 times per day for 3 weeks.  The cat not only quickly recovered from the condition completely, but she went on to give birth to a litter of 4 very healthy kittens!
